Designers notes - the inspiration behind Clyde pattern
The "Clyde" pattern took it's starting point from the industrial heritage around the River Clyde in Glasgow. Hidden amongst the patterns are references to the clock tower at the famous Singer sewing machine factory which dominated the landscape at Clydebank. Many people will be aware of the manual sewing machines which were a fixture in most homes in the 20th C. The chances are that these were made at Clydebank which produced 36 million machines and at it's height had nearly 12000 employees, being the largest sewing machine factory in the world. The clock tower had four sides and was 200ft tall (bigger than the famous Big Ben clock tower at the Houses of Parliament) so could be seen for miles around. The clock tower was demolished in 1963 and the factory finally closed in 1980.
